LIFE Svolta Blu Project

Voluntary credit system to promote water conservation and efficiency

The LIFE Svolta Blu project, funded by the Climate Governance and Information sub-programme of the EU’s LIFE programme, was born out of the need to address the water crisis, exacerbated by climate change and human impact. In a region like Vicenza, where aquifers have long been a guarantee of abundance, 2023 marked a turning point: the water crisis highlighted the urgent need for a radical change.

LIFE Svolta Blu proposes a revolutionary approach: to transform water into a resource to be protected through a "blue credit" system. This innovative local market allows those who reduce their water consumption or invest in protection solutions to be rewarded, giving them the opportunity to generate and trade credits with those who need to offset their impact. It is a model that values collaboration between citizens, businesses, and public authorities with a common goal: ensuring water for future generations.

The Pilot Area

The Vicenza plain becomes the laboratory for this vision. Here, agricultural businesses, industries, public authorities, and individual citizens will play a key role in a pilot phase aimed at saving and recharging over 120,000 cubic meters of water every year. The goal is not only to reduce water impact but also to create a replicable model for other areas in Italy and Europe.
