The LIFE Svolta Blu project has developed a new online tool designed to support citizens and businesses in assessing and reducing their water footprint. The launch of the platform coincides with World Water Day, celebrated annually on 22 March, with the aim of raising awareness about water consumption and promoting more sustainable behaviours in everyday life.

The tool is based on an interactive questionnaire that analyses both direct and indirect water use. In addition to domestic consumption, it also takes into account “virtual water”, namely the water embedded in the production processes of food and consumer goods, which represents a significant share of overall water use. At the end of the questionnaire, users receive personalised recommendations based on their habits, including practical suggestions such as reducing food waste, optimising household water use, improving irrigation practices, and making more informed purchasing decisions.

This initiative comes at a time of growing attention to water resource management, particularly in Northern Italy. Regions such as Veneto have recently faced challenges related to prolonged droughts, reduced precipitation, and declining snow cover, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen water conservation and monitoring strategies.

Coordinated by Viacqua and co-funded by the European Union, the LIFE Svolta Blu project promotes an integrated approach to sustainable water management. Its main objectives include raising public awareness, supporting conservation and restoration actions, and developing innovative mechanisms, such as the “blue credits” system, to encourage more responsible water use.

The tool is available online and allows users to calculate their water footprint and receive practical guidance on how to reduce it.
